Gregory Crewdson: 1985-2005
Gregory Crewdson (*1962 in Brooklyn, New York) uses his photographs to show artfully condensed stories that essentially deal with the intrusion of the mysterious into normality. In one work from his series Twilight (1998-2002), for example, yellow school buses are parked in front of white wooden houses. Groups of schoolchildren stand or lie motionless across the grounds. Only idyllic at first glance, the image appears "uncanny" in Freud's sense, showing something familiar but disturbingly changed and inexplicable. What exactly is happening here? Crewdson goes to the extent of dramatizing his disturbing suburban settings that is otherwise only seen in Hollywood films. Using lighting, cranes, sets and extras, he stages his visions with an obsession for detail, which are always an accurate depiction of everyday American life.
This publication brings together for the first time all of the artist's photographic productions in one volume, including his most recent, previously unpublished series Beneath the Roses.
