Review: Exhibition “Fritz Geerken – From Flood to the Surface” at Galerie Schluh

The exhibition “Fritz Geerken – From Flood to the Surface in the Schluh Gallery was a special event that put the history and art of the Worpswede painter Fritz Geerken back in the spotlight. In addition to presenting his extraordinary work, the exhibition also drew attention to the eventful history of his paintings and prints, which had to be brought out of the cellar because of the devastating floods in Lilienthal. Thanks to the commitment of the Schluh Gallery and the Geerken family, these works were saved and shown again.

The exhibition, which ran until June 7, offered a comprehensive insight into Geerken's diverse work. His works, which are characterized by intense colors and a deep engagement with nature and life, showed both his artistic versatility and his connection with the Worpswede landscape. Particularly impressive were the large-format and colored etchings, which impressively reflected Geerken's unmistakable style and his eye for detail and composition.

The exhibition received a great response from the press and art enthusiasts. It was recognized as an important contribution to the rediscovery and appreciation of Geerken and his work. Numerous visitors, including experts from the art scene, took the opportunity to learn more about the artist and the challenges of saving his works.

In addition to the artistic aspects, the exhibition also highlighted the importance of preserving cultural assets. It showed how, through commitment and collaboration, works of art can be saved from oblivion and decay.

Our special thanks go to the gallery owner, the Geerken family, the supporters and the many visitors who made this exhibition a great success.

Fritz Geerkens’ works live on and remain an important part of Worpswede’s art history.

As part of the exhibition, the Havenrevue theater Bremen performed at the Galerie Schluh
