Art machines

Digital drawing machines for artists

Artmashines aren't just ordinary plotters – they're precision drawing machines specifically designed for the needs of artists. They allow digital drawings, generative art, graphic notations, or handwriting to be transferred to paper, cardboard, or other suitable materials with impressive precision and in large formats (up to DIN A1).

What makes Artmashines special is the combination of technical sophistication and artistic openness. Unlike traditional printing systems, Artmashines "draw" with real pens, brushes, or special tools—depending on the artist's choice. This creates works that combine the quality of handcrafting with the precision of a machine.

The technology is based on systems from the renowned New York-based company Bantam Tool . Of particular note is the Nextdraw plotter , which impresses with its modular design, high precision, and the ability to customize it. The largest version of this plotter (for paper sizes up to A1) is currently on display at the Markus Lippeck Gallery and impressively demonstrates how mechanical drawing becomes a form of artistic expression.

What can you do with an art machine?

  • Complex patterns, algorithms, data art
  • Reproductions in real ink or pencil look
  • Font as line, structure, ornament
  • Combination of traditional drawing and machine precision
  • In series, but with haptic depth

How does it work?

An art machine moves a writing instrument on two axes across the drawing surface – controlled by digital vector data (SVG, GCode, etc.). The software translates creative input from programs like Illustrator, Inkscape, or Processing into motion data. The machine then works layer by layer and stroke by stroke – like a very patient hand.
